Claudia Westermann * 1971 in Heidelberg, Germany, is an artist and licensed architect, and Senior Associate Professor in Architecture at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou, China, where she co-founded the Urban Ecologies research group, bridging Art, Humanities, and Science. Studies in architecture at the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and the University of Tampere, Finland. Diploma in architecture. Official member of the German Chamber of Architects. Additional postgraduate studies in the field of media art at the HfG (Hochschule für Gestaltung im ZKM) in Karlsruhe. Since 2003 Claudia Westermann has been a member with the international research network Planetary Collegium (CAiiA). Her PhD, obtained in 2011 and entitled "An Experimental Research into Inhabitable Theories," was supervised by Prof. Roy Ascott and Prof. Mike Philips and examined by Dr. David Cunningham (Westminster). Claudia Westermann's research and art/design portfolio explores architecture, technology, aesthetics and epistemology, with an emphasis on the relation between the material and virtual worlds. Her works have included screen based works for the internet, videos, installations, performances, as well as architecture. From 2001 to 2010 she was part of the administration team of the Syndicate mailing list, a communication project of the Syndicate network. Various text-based works in the context of the internet. From 2002-2006 regular contributions mostly in French language to 2balles.cc, a collaborative project initiated by Frédéric Madre.  Claudia Westermann's video, installation and performance works have been exhibited and presented internationally at conferences and at more than 30 international exhibitions. Claudia Westermann is the Principal Investigator for two research grants running from autumn 2019 for three years: 'Strategies for integrating empirical approaches to embodied cognition into architectural design processes' (550000 CNY) and 'Actualizing Chinese Conceptions of Space: Theories and Strategies for the Design of Resonant Architecture' (450000 CNY). Publications have included articles in the journals Design Ecologies, Technoetic Arts and Kybernetes. Most recently, 'A Poetics of Designing' was published in the book Design Cybernetics: Navigating the New by Springer (2019). Claudia Westermann received several awards for her teaching, including two prizes for the Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics module for architecture undergraduates that she has been teaching since 2014 at XJTLU.
